The calendar
Markets that stay after Christmas
Most of the famous German markets are gone by Christmas Eve, or on the day itself. Nuremberg, Dresden and Munich all end on 24 December 2026. Frankfurt ends on 22 December. Cologne’s cathedral market ends on 23 December. If your journey is the week between Christmas and New Year, those are the wrong cities.
A few published seasons do run on. Vienna’s Rathaus market runs from 13 November to 26 December 2026. Salzburg’s tourism board lists 19 November 2026 to 1 January 2027. Prague’s organiser lists both central squares from 28 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. Brussels runs to 3 January 2027. Bruges, on Visit Bruges, does the same. Budapest’s Vörösmarty Square organiser describes the market as open from 13 November 2026 until the dawn of the new year. Bolzano lists 27 November 2026 to 6 January 2027.
Two cautions. Edinburgh and Hyde Park Winter Wonderland also run into January, and both are large fairs rather than a timber-stall square; Edinburgh says the markets are free to enter, and the London gates are closed on Christmas Day. And a date on this page is only as good as the source linked from the market. Read it again before you book a room for the 27th.
